It is known that tens of thousands of people are working under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program in British Columbia. Many of these workers endure unsafe or exploitative working conditions and often do not receive the health and safety education they need.
The BCFED Health & Safety Centre has a dedicated program to help empower and protect these workers. Through customized workshops and educational sessions delivered in workers’ first languages, participants learn about their workplace rights and protections, their responsibilities, hazard identification, and the workers’ compensation system. We strive to make these workshops accessible and interactive for all by using the popular education model.
Every year, we reach hundreds of Migrant Workers through these workshops and educational opportunities. However, we know we are only reaching a small portion of the workers who could benefit from this support. It is important to recognize that Migrant Workers do some of the most difficult and dangerous work in our province. They help put food on our tables, provide essential services, and contribute to communities and our economy in countless ways. We believe these workers deserve to have a strong voice in workplace health and safety and to be treated fairly and with dignity. All workers in British Columbia deserve the same workplace health and safety rights and protections, regardless of their immigration status.
